Summer Course in Legal Studies

Our summer course in Legal Studies comprises a study programme of 20 lessons (15 hours) weekly.  The course is designed for those with an English language level equivalent to a minimum of IELTS 6.0, or CEFR B2/C1, who require to improve their legal English in the context of international law and its related fields.  The course includes preparation and practice for the University of Cambridge ESOL International Legal English Certificate (ILEC) †.  BBSI is an accredited ILEC Examination Centre.

Course Duration. 2-12 weeks

Minimum English Entry Level.  Equivalent to a minimum of IELTS 6.0, or CEFR B2/C1

Course Structure & Content.  Training focuses on the development of legal concepts and legal knowledge, and is designed to enable students to develop appropriate legal vocabulary and terminology, as well as those communication skills required within the legal profession.  The course combines current legal practice and legal issues and includes targeted case studies.

      *  conflict of laws
      *  commercial & consumer law
      *  law of sale of goods
      *  contract law     
      *  corporate criminal law
      *  human rights
      *  law & justice
      *  current affairs & the Law

      Preparation for the International Legal English Certificate (ILEC) 
      *  drafting legal documents & letters
      *  understanding legal documents
      *  legal negotiations 
      *  client interviews
      *  building specialist vocabulary & pronunciation skills

   Visits
      *  visits to Bournemouth Magistrates' and Crown Courts.  The Royal Courts of Justice 
            and the Old Bailey in London are included in the course syllabus.  Please note 
            however that these are strictly subject to availability and there may be additional 
            costs involved.

Learning Outcomes.  Participants with good attendance who complete all class work and 
assignments will be able to communicate effectively in English in a professional legal and
business environment, and will acquire a sound knowledge and understanding of 
international law, business law and legal systems and procedures.

† Examination fess for external examinations are not included in the BBSI course fees.
