Summer Course in Legal Studies

The BBSI summer course in Legal Studies comprises a study programme of 20 lessons (15 hours) weekly. The course is designed for those with a minimum English language level equivalent to IELTS [Academic] 6.0/CEFR B2, who wish to improve their legal English and business skills.  Training focuses on developing students' understanding of legal concepts, vocabulary and skills, and combines current legal and business issues with targeted case studies.  Participants with good attendance who successfully complete all class work and assignments will be able to communicate effectively in English in a professional legal and business environment, and will acquire a sound knowledge and understanding of law in an international context.

 

Professional Qualifications.  BBSI is an Accredited Examination Centre for the University of Cambridge ESOL International Legal English Certificate (ILEC)+ .  Our summer course in Legal Studies includes preparation for the ILEC examination within the syllabus.  For students intending in the future to undertake the ILEC examination, however, we recommend a minimum of 12 weeks' preparation prior to their examination date.  

 
Course Outline

Course Duration.  2-12 weeks.

Minimum English-Language Entry Level.  IELTS 6.0/CEFR B2.

Course Code.  LAW.

 
Course Entry Dates.  Entry to this flexible course is weekly from July to September. The first entry date for 2012 is 2 July and the last entry date is 10 September.
 

Minimum Age.  17 years.

Awards.  Academic achievement is ascertained by means of continuous assessment.

 

      BBSI Certificate in Legal Studies

 
Course Structure & Content.   A minimum of 2 weeks' study is required, comprising 20, forty-five minute lessons (15 hours weekly). Course breakdown is as follows:

Course Elements.   The Legal Studies summer course incorporates specialised elements within the following topics:

 

      Legal Studies Components 
            *  introduction to UK & EU law
            *  public international law
            *  conflict of laws
            *  commercial & consumer law
            *  law of sale of goods
            *  contract law     
            *  corporate criminal law
            *  human rights
            *  law & justice
            *  current affairs & the Law

            Preparation for the International Legal English Certificate (ILEC) 
                  *  drafting legal documents & letters
                  *  understanding legal documents
                  *  legal negotiations 
                  *  client interviews
                  *  building specialist vocabulary & pronunciation skills

Course Visits.   Visits to Bournemouth Magistrates', Crown & County Courts, the Supreme Court, the Old Bailey, & the Royal Courts of Justice, London, will be included in the course syllabus where possible.  These visits are strictly subject to availability, however, and there may be additional costs involved.  

 

Course Objectives.  The course objectives are to:

      *  Develop English-language communication skills & legal English. 
      *  Build appropriate vocabulary in the field of law. 
      *  Develop an understanding of current legal theory & practice.
      *  Develop an understanding of international & commercial law & legal procedures.

 

Course Fees

      LAW - £235.00 weekly. 

 

+ Examination fess for external examinations are not included in the BBSI course fees.

BBSI courses are carefully designed and structured at different language levels to enable international students to develop all 4 English language skills simultaneously, while developing their professional communication skills and professional knowledge in academic, vocational or professional context, in the specialised subject of their choice. Students therefore have the flexibility to focus on either academic or vocational progression, depending on their personal training needs and particular learning objectives.
