Summer Course in Finance & Business Skills


The BBSI summer course Finance & Business Skills (FBS) with English is an intensive summer course conducted at our Summer School in Bournemouth, England. 
 
Our summer course in Finance & Business Skills comprises a study programme of 30 lessons (22.5 hours) weekly.  This course is designed for those with an English language level equivalent to a minimum of IELTS 5.5, or CEFR B2, who require to improve their English and business skills in the context of finance and financial services and their related fields.  The course includes preparation and practice for the University of Cambridge ESOL International Certificate in Financial English (ICFE) .  BBSI is an accredited ICFE Examination Centre.

Course Outline

Course Duration.   2-12 weeks

Minimum English Entry Level.  Equivalent to a minimum of IELTS 5.5, or CEFR Level B2

Course Code.  FBS

Course Structure.   

      *  20 lessons (15 hours) weekly in finance
      * 10 lessons (7.5 hours) weekly in business skills

Entry Dates.  The course dates for 2012 are 2 July - 21 September 2012

Minimum Age.  17 years

Award.   BBSI Certificate in Finance & Business Skills

Optional Examination. 
 
      University of Cambridge ICFE (examination dates)
Course Structure & Content.  Training focuses on the development of finance and business skills, and is designed to enable students to develop appropriate finance and business vocabulary, as well as professional skills and professional communication skills.  The course combines current finance and business issues wtih targeted case studies.

      *  the external environment & factors affecting business activity 
      *  types of business structure & the legal implications of limited companies
      *  Central Banks & fixed interest securities
      *  collective investments
      *  equities
      *  systemic & non-systemic risk
      *  personal financial planning
      *  analysing a firm's competitive future

      *  competition issues
      *  nature & role of commercial banks
      *  topical corporate issues
 

Business Skills Components.
 
The business skills components provide additional skills practice, which are aimed at developing more effective communication skills for the business environment.  The teaching materials are largely authentic and are based on real-life case studies.  Designed to build confidence through activities such as discussions, role-play and simulations, the skills covered each week will be selected from the following:

      *  action minutes

      *  effective CVs
      *  business profiles & structure
      *  organograms

      *  effective openings
      *  structure & delivery
      *  dealing with questions

      *  facilitating meetings

      *  networking & building relationships

      *  taking & leaving messages
      *  making arrangements
      *  checking, clarifying & problem solving 
      *  teleconferencing
      *  customer support
      *  making enquiries
      *  formal & informal conversations

      *  bidding & bargaining
      *  win-win & closing 
      *  diplomatic language 
      *  tactics
      *  making a proposal
 
Course Objectives
      *  to develop confidence & fluency in the language beyond Intermediate level
      *  to build appropriate vocabulary in the fields of finance & economics
      *  to develop an understanding of finance, econimics & financial services
      *  to develop an understanding of current international theory & practice within the
            the financial sector
      *  to acquire practical business communication skills relevant to the modern
            working environment

Learning Outcomes.  
Participants with good attendance who complete all class work and 
assignments will be able to communicate effectively in English in a professional finance 
and business environment, and will acquire a sound knowledge and understanding of 
international finance, economics and financial services.

      FBS - £280.00 weekly
 
† Examination fess for external examinations are not included in the BBSI course fees.
BBSI courses are carefully designed and structured at different language levels to enable international students to develop all 4 English language skills simultaneously, while developing their professional communication skills and professional knowledge in academic, vocational or professional context, in the specialised subject of their choice. Students therefore have the flexibility to focus on either academic or vocational progression, depending on their personal training needs and particular learning objectives.
