BBSI Academic Summary

UK Language College and Business Training centre for academic English

Students at BBSI are encouraged through teacher support to develop a sense of self-motivation and initiative, enabling them to take responsibility for their own development. The school employs a range of teaching methods to suit different types of course and learner. Interactive techniques stimulate interest, increase the efficiency of the learning process and achieve high levels of language retention, while continuous assessment inspires motivation and encourages self-evaluation. Moreover, BBSI focuses on offering a correct balance in emphasis between training ethos and social atmosphere. Our aim is to make the UK learning experience as enjoyable and rewarding as possible.  Each of our courses contains some or all of the following elements:

* English-language development and skills practice

* functional, everyday social and professional communication skills

* individual study skills development

* specialised academic and professional training

* preparation for language, academic or professional examinations

* support to encourage students to make the most of their time in the UK

The maximum class size is 12 participants; albeit BBSI reserves the right to increase the number to 15 during peak periods.

Academic Coordination.
We aim for high standards from our academic management team.  All training programmes are supervised by the Director of Studies.  Teachers are responsible for the following:

* coordination of students' work with other teachers

* marking and assessing assignments

* supervision of individual academic progress

* monitoring of attendance and performance

* regular, individual consultation with students

* coordination of academic reports

* liaison with administrative and welfare staff

* monitoring academic standards

Academic Staff.  BBSI employs full- and part-time teachers and freelance specialist trainers.  All teachers are professionally qualified with either a degree or relevant professional experience, a diploma or certificate qualification in ELT, or both.  An in-house and external teacher-training support programme runs throughout the year, enabling our teaching staff to develop their teaching skills and knowledge.

School Timetable.  Study periods comprise blocks of 2, forty-five minute lessons at set periods throughout the day.  In addition, students are expected to optimise their learning experience by participating in the social programme and by utilising the BBSI extra-curricular IT facilities.

Assessment & Grading.  To assess academic progress accurately and fairly, BBSI employs a

system of continuous assessment that has been developed as an alternative to a formal examination system. Assignments in different formats are set regularly to assess the achievement of learning outcomes.  These assignments may be in the form of written essays, reports, or case studies; progress tests; research and analysis projects; preparation and delivery of presentations; business simulations and other group work; or portfolio work.

To ensure grading is consistent and fair, careful guidelines are agreed by academic staff, and internal verification is standard procedure to meet rigorous quality-management requirements. All work is assessed on the basis of originality and the quality of its presentation, content and language.  BBSI submits all students’ written work to an academic plagiarism detector (Turnitin), to ensure that all work is original. Plagiarism is not tolerated, and will result in failure.  The following are also taken into account: general ability and performance, assimilation, participation and motivation, punctuality and attendance, and overall academic progress.  Grading criteria is detailed in the table on the Assessment and Grading page
